Showcase of Graduate Work

Here you can see highlights of my work completed to during my Master of Arts in Education (MAED) experience from Michigan State University.  To see a detailed list of the courses the artifacts were completed in, please visit my annotated transcript

My work is organized into three sections:

  • Art Education: I have a passion for teaching visual arts because I believe it is the perfect platform for experiencing and exploring learning of all kinds. My showcase features the incorporation of technology and literacy into the art classroom.

  • Math Education: For my MAED I chose a focus on Mathematics and Science to support my teaching in the mathematics classroom.  My showcase displays discipline specific strategies to support student learning.

  • Reflective Learning in the Classroom: I am a firm believer that reflecting upon teaching and learning is paramount to being a good educator.  This section provides artifacts that can be utilized across disciplines in a reflective capacity.

Art Education

Technology Integration - Rendering in Ink Vimeo

The TPACK model indicates that technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge should be thought about and integrated together in order to incorporate technology successfully into the classroom.  This video shows my ability to integrate TPACK into my classroom.  It serves as an introduction to one of the many techniques used in art. One benefit of using technology in this way in an art context is that it can be added to my classroom page for students that miss the demo days in class.

Technology Integration - Surrealism Padlet

The SAMR model of technology integration says that technology can be used to substitute, augment, modify, or redefine tasks in a classroom.  This padlet shows my ability to use technology to augment a task in the classroom. I created this wall as a page to collect all the project examples and related videos to promote inspiration in students.  This action augmented my task of project introduction because it substituted my normal procedure with the added improvement of being interactive.  Students can view, favorite, comment, and even add their own content to build a cooperative platform for inspiration.

Disciplinary Literacy - Art

The arts are often used as a platform for bridging subject matters and can support multiple forms of learning.  This artifact shows my ability to approach literacy in an art context.  I began to form this bank of strategies during my student teaching year and refined the bank during my later graduate experience.  From vocabulary development that is discipline specific, to forming inferences about a piece of artwork, literacy can be supported in the art room in many ways.

Math Education

Project Based Learning

Metallic Structure

Project Based Learning (PBL) is one initiative to encourage more engagement within the classroom and offer opportunities for student's strengths to show through cooperative groups. This essay shows my ability to design and implement PBL within a math classroom.  The paper outlines my experience incorporating a project to see what effect it had on my students learning experience.  The experience informed the design of an action research project  explained below.

Discipline Literacy - Mathematics

Metallic Structure

Student's literacy skills have long been held to be important in students success in high school and beyond.  With a traditionally non-literacy focused discipline like mathematics, the strategies to teach literacy within the classroom are highly specific.  This artifact shows my ability to identify and utilize literacy strategies within the mathematic context.  I created this bank of strategies to utilize as a resource for lesson planning in order to teach mathematical literacy.

Math Education

Mathematics Case Study

Math Formulas

In an effort to utilize some of the literacy strategies collected above, I experienced this case study with a student.  This study shows my ability to give assessments, and develop lesson plans to target instruction that develops mathematical literacy. Note that the first file is the write up of the case study and the second file holds photographs of the individual artifacts from the experience.

Action Research

Teacher Writing a Formula on a Blackboar

One of the most relevant forms of research in the world of education is the research done in action by a teacher or educator.  Every school has different students and environments, so action research can help to identify problems and practical solutions present in individual classrooms.  This artifact shows that I can design an action research project to address issues identified in the context of my own experience.

Reflective Learning in the Classroom

Classroom Expectations and Materials

Classroom management.  One of the best ways to promote a positive culture in the classroom is by teaching (and reteaching) well defined classroom procedures and expectations.  This artifact shows my ability to design a plan for classroom management to create an environment conducive to learning.  The plan is foundational and gets modified for use in the classroom to teach expectations and procedures.  Each year I reflect on what worked and what needs to be altered.

Educational Inquiry - Ethnographic Research

Open Textbook in Library

There are different forms of inquiry in an educational context.  This essay shows my ability to use ethnographic research as a form of inquiry about my students that come from a different culture than my own.  Specifically, this paper is written as a participant observer into the Maori culture from New Zealand.  While I may never have the opportunity to teach someone from the Maori culture, I will undoubtedly be presented with students from cultures drastically different from my own.  Ethnographic research is one form of inquiry that can aid me in my effort to reach these students.

Educational Inquiry - Technology

Typing

Continuing my pursuit into inquiry, this essay shows my ability to use autobiographical inquiry to reflect on my own personal experiences.  This reflection allows me to identify biases when researching educational issues that cause debates.  In particular, this is an essay on my experience growing up with technology and how it influences my beliefs on the integration of technology in the classroom.
