The Artist behind the Teacher
My first art teacher was Mark Kistler from the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) show "Imagination Station." We only had 5 channels growing up, and PBS was the only one that showed kids shows in the afternoon. So as soon as I got home, I would rush to the television for what seemed like my own private art lesson. I became hooked on drawing. However, I went to a small school with no elementary art program, and I was involved in band and choir, so I wasn't able to take an art class in middle school. Fortunately, my school had a program that allowed students who performed well academically to attend a local community college and earn college credit. This is where I officially took my first art class, and my professor encouraged me to pursue art education. Below are examples of some of my artwork created over the years.
